1st AOC wine designation in France in 1936, the 3150 hectares of the appellation extend over 5 municipalities: Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Bédarrides, Courthézon, Orange, and Sorgues. With 300 declared harvesters, the appellation produces an average of 90,000 hectoliters per vintage, about 12 million bottles, distributed at 93% for red wines and 7% for white wines. Benefiting from a unique natural heritage, the AOC relies on 13 grape varieties, 5 distinct terroirs, and an exceptional climate, marked by sunshine and the mistral wind, to produce exceptional wines mainly distributed for export (66% of volumes in 2021). Historically and continuously committed to sustainable development issues, 35% of the AOC's surfaces are cultivated in organic or biodynamic agriculture.

THE AOC CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE

Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a controlled designation of origin (AOC) that embodies excellence in the world of French wines. The wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape are the result of the meticulous work of the Vintners' Syndicate, which strives to promote production with secular know-how combining tradition and modernity.

THE RICH HISTORY OF CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE WINES

The history of Châteauneuf-du-Pape begins in antiquity when the Romans discovered the fertile land and mild climate of this region. Convinced of the exceptional potential of these lands for viticulture, they began planting the first vines. This visionary decision would shape the future of wine and the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation.

Over the centuries that followed, monks played a crucial role in the development and promotion of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. They devoted their time and expertise to perfecting winemaking techniques, which had a significant impact on the quality of wine production.

A crucial step was taken in 1936 when Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine was officially recognized by obtaining the controlled designation of origin (AOC). This recognition means that Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine had reached an exceptional level of quality and authenticity. It is now protected by strict standards that regulate its production rules (regulation of cultivation methods, setting a minimum alcohol degree, restrictive list of authorized grape varieties, mandatory grape sorting, etc.) protecting it while conferring its special status in the world of wine.
